I have no doubt that amongst the racy proverbs of the Chinose language there is some proverb of similar purport, that "All study and no crackers or fireworks make John Chinaman a great blockhead." (Laughter and applause.) If there be such a proverb I recom- mend you to apply it to your minds, and if there be not, I recommend you to translate the Eng- lish proverb," All work and no play make Jacki a dull boy."
